Joshua Tree is a big park (nearly 800,000 acres) and offers a wide variety of outdoor adventure opportunities. You can find old mines, historic structures, explore neat rock formations, and of course see the iconic Joshua Trees everywhere you look. There’s also excellent climbing all over the park and it’s a great area for stargazing – we even came out here to shoot a solar eclipse one year and weren’t disappointed.

Where to Stay
Because of the popularity of the park (particularly for climbing), we’ve generally found it difficult to find a campsite – the park has 9 campgrounds, most of which are first come, first serve. This is tough for people who have regular jobs and can’t just show up on a Thursday afternoon to claim a campsite through the weekend. On the plus side, backcountry camping is allowed and is free – you just need to park and register at a backcountry registration board (a list of which can be found under the “registering” section of this webpage).
