Intrepid Top Pick!

Location: Western Khammouane Province, Laos

Time Required: 2 hours, not including travel time to/from location

Red Tape/Notes: Dry season only – trek will be very muddy just after the rainy season. This is an easy activity to do in conjunction with Tham Nong Pa Seuam, since you can end your trek at the Pa Seuam cave.

Want to explore the stunning karst landscape that forms some of Laos’ best known scenery? This is a great option! Technically this little adventure is in the Phou Hin Boun National Protected Area, which has its own general post, but we loved this activity so much that we’re giving it its own post. You can get dropped off in a village (Ban Nakhang Xang, to be precise) at the edge of the jungle and follow a trail off into the green wilderness. Better yet, you can do some cave exploring in un-named, largely unexplored caves! We opted to skirt the edge of the karst cliffs rather than staying on the standard jungle path, and ducked into every likely looking opening we could find. The result was a fabulous couple of hours filled with dirt, mud, stalactites, sweet cave passages, a cute lizard, and a not-so-cute juvenile Giant Huntsman spider. Ah, the joys of the intrepid life!
