Epic Travel → Europe → Iceland → Southern Iceland → Háifoss

Location: Thjórsárdalur, Southern Iceland

Time Required: 1-2 hours

Red Tape/Notes: If you’re good at driving off-road, you can make it in a standard clearance vehicle (although the road conditions are ever-changing so that may not always be the case). You can also hike in from the bottom, but this is a much longer hike and would probably take you all day.

What’s Nearby?: GjáinHjálparfossStöng

This is one of Iceland’s tallest waterfalls, at 122 meters. As an added bonus, it has a neighboring waterfall called Granni (which literally means “neighbor” – cute, right?) and the road to get here is a little rough which keeps away a vast majority of tourists (and certainly the tour buses). When you park at the parking area, you just follow an obvious use trail that runs along the top of the mesa and then travels along the edge of the canyon, offering beautiful views of Granni and Háifoss. If you get lucky, there might even be rainbows in the falls.
