Kinloch is one of the few places we actually slowed down in New Zealand – and one of the places you take a step back and pause to appreciate the small things. There’s nothing particularly epic to do here (although you can find some excellent salmon and trout in the bay – rod rentals are available at the lodge), but the scenery is beautiful, the lodge accommodations are pleasant (we love that the lodge has been operating as an inn since the 1800’s) and the food is good in the restaurant. There are lots of tramping options nearby (including the famed Routeburn track), you can join a 1 or 2 hour kayaking trip, go on a horseback outing, or any number of other day trip options, including some excellent nearby packrafting in the Rees Valley. Overall, an excellent place to base yourself for a few days to get away from the crowds and easily enjoy some of the more remote areas.
