Mining began in Leadfield in 1926, and numerous promotions drew people to the area where a town was laid out. Unfortunately, the mines quickly ran dry and the town was abandoned within a year of its founding, leaving behind the remnants of a few buildings and some mine shafts. The town can only be accessed by driving the one-way, 27 mile backcountry (high clearance necessary) Titus Canyon Road. This helps keep the town from being overrun with visitors, as it would surely be if access were easier, since its location is quite close to the most heavily trafficked section of the park, as the crow flies. Luckily, tourists aren’t crows, and you may well have the place to yourself for a quick wander around its forgotten hillsides.
