Nelson Ghost Town

Nelson Ghost Town

Epic Travel → North America → Mountain States → Nevada → Nelson Ghost Town

Location: Eldorado Mountains, Las Vegas, Nevada

Time Required: 1-4 hours

Red Tape/Notes: Typically open during the day; if they’re open it’s free to walk around and look at the old buildings so long as you check in at the main building. Please don’t wander around if they’re not open – people live here, so you’re basically walking around someone’s home uninvited. Mine tours require reservations and are $15 per adult – visit their website for more information.

What’s Nearby?: Jubilee Mine, Keyhole Canyon, Pioneer Saloon

We passed this place on our way to the Jubilee Mine a couple of years ago, but they were closed, so we stopped again on our last trip and were lucky enough to catch them while they were open. They’re super nice people and will let you explore the grounds, including a cool old barn. There are loads of interesting antiques all around and some pretty amazing (and amusing) old cars. The family living here runs mine tours of the famous Techatticup Mine (planning to do the tour on our next trip to the area) – the oldest and richest gold mine in Southern Nevada, and they also rent canoes and kayaks if you fancy a paddle on the nearby Colorado River (it’s five miles away) – but they do require you to have a roof rack.
