Salem is best known for the Salem Witch Trials of 1692, but is also just a very pretty historic coastal town. It’s also home to the house that inspired Nathaniel Hawthorne’s House of the Seven Gables, which is worth a tour (if nothing else, I really enjoyed the secret staircase which leads to the attic – it was added in the early 1900’s apparently just for fun). Salem is very walkable – you can easily stroll to the waterfront and view the ships and lovely old houses, and return via some backstreets through old parts of town, including the Old Burying Point Cemetery – and has a lovely and vibrant downtown, with great shopping, nice restaurants, and nice historic sections.
