Intrepid Top Pick!

Location: Thórsmörk, Southern Iceland

Time Required: 1.5 – 2 hours

Red Tape/Notes: Requires river crossings to reach the canyon entrance; I’m not sure this should be attempted without a high clearance, 4 wheel drive vehicle.

What’s Nearby?: SeljalandsfossGljúfrabúiThórsmörk, MerkurkerGígjökull, FimmvörðuhálsMossy Lava Rocks

This is a great little canyon on the way into the main part of Thórsmörk. The canyon starts out initially quite wide, but with interesting, mossy walls, and the trail crisscrosses back and forth over the stream running through it. The canyon gets progressively narrower, ending in a nice waterfall. Along the way (left side on the way in, right side on the way back), there’s a small side canyon that ends in an extremely cool waterfall, inside what’s nearly a cave. This waterfall is much more impressive than the one at the end of the canyon, but I’m still glad we did the full length.
