Elevation Gain: 120 feet

Time Required: 30 minutes (add a little extra time if you’re stopping at Hooker Falls)

Red Tape/Notes: You can also get to Triple Falls from the High Falls parking area – we didn’t do this, so we only discuss the Hooker Falls trail approach here. For more information on the trail, including directions, visit the DuPont State Forest website. Please note that you can also visit High Falls via a loop trail which includes Triple Falls and Hooker Falls – we didn’t do this so we don’t discuss it here, but if you have more time it’s an option.

Triple Falls is a three-tiered 125 foot waterfall set in the scenic woodlands of Dupont State Forest (even the drive to the parking area is pretty). North Carolina purchased Dupont Forest in the 1990’s and a photo of Triple Falls was used in the packet of materials presented to convince the state to buy the property. It would have convinced me, too. There are two viewpoints of the falls – the first one only lets you see the base of the falls, so make sure you hike up to the second viewpoint to see the whole thing. You can hike down to the flat rock shelf between the middle and lower falls (you can see people down there in the picture below) – you can take the very brief detour to see Hooker Falls on your way up the trail (it’s perhaps a 0.1 mile detour), and while not as impressive, is still worthwhile.
