Location: Golden Circle, Southwest Iceland

Time Required: 30 minutes – 1 hour

Red Tape/Notes: If you really want to have a nice soak, go to the nearby Secret Lagoon. Hrunalaug is in danger of being destroyed (really destroyed…as in the owners are considering bulldozing it) because of overuse and damage by tourists. Please be gentle with it, if you choose to visit (I’d recommend coming early in the morning) – absolutely no camping, stop drinking and leaving your trash and urinating in the changing area! Large tour groups: shame on you if you’re coming here; this place is much too small for a large group.

What’s Nearby?: GullfossGeysir, Faxi, FriðheimarReykjavík, EldhestarThingvellir

I seriously considered not publishing this place because I don’t want to contribute to the problem that already exists, but I really doubt the traffic from this website is going to make a dent, considering the site is published in so many other places. Hrunalaug is/was an adorable little hot spring in a picturesque setting; it’s perfect for a couple of people and the temperature is extremely pleasant. I imagine it was ideal before tourists found it and started destroying it, and now the owners have considered bulldozing it because of the hassle associated with the trash and vandalism, not to mention wear and tear on their little slice of paradise that was never meant to accommodate raging hoards of idiots. So if you choose to go, please be gentle. Or maybe just stop by for a look and help pick up some of the trash to ease the burden on the unfortunate land owners. On a happier note, there are fields of adorable Icelandic horses nearby, and those are always worth seeing!
