Intrepid Top Pick!

Location: Finnish Lapland

Time Required: 1 – 8 hours (depending on how long of a trail you choose)

Red Tape/Notes: The skiing trails in Kakslauttenen are all located in the East Village, and you can opt to take a lesson, or just borrow shoes/skis (they’re included with your overnight stay) and head off on your own.

There are some great, well-marked ski trails around the east village. We did a really fun 20 km loop up to Kiilopää through the back country (we saw virtually no one else), had a fabulous northern lights sighting on the way home (sadly, it was cloudy by the time we were home and could get to my camera and tripod), and got back in time for dinner. If you haven’t done a lot of Nordic skiing, no big deal. It’s pretty easy to pick up, although there is an odd tendency to just randomly fall over if you’re not paying attention, which provides an always helpful level of amusement to the activity.
