I have mixed feelings about snowmobiling because I don’t like the pollution and potential damage to the landscape, and I definitely prefer peace and solitude to being disturbed by the loud roaring a vehicles cruising by. It’s kind of a selfish activity – it’s fun for you while you’re doing it, and not fun for anyone else who can see or hear you. There’s no help for the environmental piece, but at least with snowmobiling you’re just cruising over a temporary surface that will melt come spring. We went on a Northern Lights hunting trip using the snowmobiles, and you can get farther out than you do on either the reindeer sleighs or dogsleds, which was one of the reason we chose to go. And we did see the lights – there was pretty heavy cloud cover, but the lights must have been fantastic underneath because they were intense enough that you could still see them through the cloud cover, and shining through the breaks in the clouds.
