Slickrock Falls Trail

Epic Travel → North America → The South → North Carolina → Brevard → Slickrock Falls

Location: Pisgah National Forest, near Brevard, North Carolina

Distance: 0.1 mile roundtrip to the waterfall, 2.0 miles roundtrip to the South Face of Looking Glass Rock

Elevation Gain: very little if you’re just going to falls (there are some steps though), 640 feet if you’re going to the base of Looking Glass Rock.

Time Required: 5 minutes for the falls, an hour for Looking Glass Rock.

Red Tape/Notes: The falls are best viewed after a heavy rain and are otherwise not very impressive. You can see the falls from the parking area so if they look super lame, no need to make the effort (unless you’re heading on to Looking Glass Rock). The Hike the South website has helpful information on this hike.

As noted above, the falls are best viewed after a heavy rain. We were on the trail to go to Looking Glass Rock, and it hadn’t been raining heavily, so the falls weren’t at their best, but it was still worth a stop. You can also scramble over the rocks and go into the little cave behind the falls for additional fun (we stopped at the falls on the way back, and everyone was beat after a day of climbing so we didn’t do this, but it looks nice from the pictures I’ve seen) – just be careful of the namesake slick rocks. Moving on from the falls, the trail heads up through lovely forest before emerging at the base of the South face of Looking Glass Rock. I suppose this could be an interesting destination for a hike, but most people come here to climb. Keep an eye out for rattlesnakes when you’re in the area – we had to chase a very chubby one off the road before we could leave.
